This tutorial will show you how to make a Twitter Map using Microsoft’s Bing service.
Firstly, go to Bing Maps and select the Map Apps button near the bottom left of the screen.
From the options which will appear on screen, choose to sort by title, then locate and select Twitter Maps.
Once clicked you will be able to enter the Twitter terms, location and/or user you wish to plot on your map. For this tutorial, I chose the location as the United Kingdom with the keyword Egypt as this was a popular trending topic on the day this was written.
This generates a Twitter map (give it time to populate) showing those Tweets which have location data and fulfil your search criteria. A plus sign indicates more than one Tweet in a specific location.
Clicking the points on the map provides further information.
Now you have created your map, you can embed it into your own website if you wish. To do this, simply click the option to Embed in Your Site option (just above the Map Apps icon) and you will be able to refine your search parameters, fix the size and set the location of your map. Alternatively, you can select the Anywhere option, which will centre your map on wherever the most recent Tweet from you search is located.
Finally, copy the code provided and insert this into your own website. The example below shows Tweets made in the Birmingham area using the #ff hashtag.
